60/365 But. . .I want to play with my minis!

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Awoke stiff and sore (the expected result of yesterday’s long drive), but eager to go through the boxes of miniature treasures I brought back and carefully return them to the Conservatory and Oak Shadows. However, I had a trek across San Antonio to make first, to deliver my friend’s room boxes. Driving was the easy part; removing the Very Large (did I mention heavy?) box from The Lady and helping N. carry it through garage, dining room, living room and hallway to its new location was a real test! Took my usual tour of her huge collection, showed her where to dock her camera’s memory card (“No, the port won’t be on the keyboard.”), then had to go poking around her system trying to figure out just where the pictures had been saved to! G-d, I hate Windows Vista!!! LOL! Eventually found enough energy to point my car towards home and “play time”. . . . . .or not.

Half-way home, my cell phone starts playing “Davy Crockett” (yeah, well – what else would it play?) – it’s N. “Hope I caught you soon enough” (ie-still on her side of town) “where’s the transformer?” Thud! Remember the transformer I mentioned yesterday? Well, it was no longer tucked behind my driver’s seat; last night, I very efficiently brought it indoors. This morning, I very inefficiently left it there! Worse yet, my carelessness and N’s scheduled appointments meant the delivery of said transformer would have to wait till near the evening rush-hour traffic period. Sigh!

“All’s well that ends well” – by the time I began to visibly (and mentally) ‘wilt’ this evening, N. had her transformer and I had my new treasures refurnished and tucked into their new display spaces. Have to try to get to sleep early tonight, as my next “mini adventure” starts tomorrow morning and the alarm is set for 6:30 AM. >Groan!<

59/365 Round-trip road trip

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

I put nearly 500 miles on The Lady’s odometer today, and now feel like I put twice that mileage on me! (Dealing with miles of Houston-area traffic added to the *thrill factor*.) Despite the “little football players wearing cleats” which are now running around vigorously on my upper back and the new expletives my wrists & legs seem to have learned, I am a very happy gal!

Being an impatient sort (hehe – that shouldn’t surprise anyone who knows me!), I arranged to drive to Dickinson, TX to pick up my newest miniature treasure -a “Lady Jane” Conservatory – rather than (shudder!) trust the postal system to deliver it to me swiftly and undamaged. I left Casa Blackburn at 9 AM and located the Elmer’s (of “GweChe Collectibles”) driveway a little before our agreed upon 2 PM arrival time. Visited with Carroll & Gary Elmer (delightful people, attendees of many Castine workshops and well-known among discerning collectors of miniatures for many decades. Gary is an IGMA Fellow.) and thoroughly enjoyed a tour of the remaining (and still stellar) collection of artisan’s creations, many of which they are re-homing prior to moving/downsizing.

The Conservatory (MY Conservatory, now! Whee!!) completely surpassed its photos and my remembered impressions from various miniatures shows I have attended! I was absolutely thrilled to have achieved another portion of my post-retirement dream (adding creations from some of the *big name* miniaturists I have respected and had only on my wish list for many years.) The Conservatory was created by Jane Young (business name “Lady Jane”), and several of the furniture pieces in it were created by Gary himself.

I became aware (via several cell phone calls received while I was en route to Dickinson) that I would also be bringing back a large room box and another box/scene (maybe more!) for a member of my miniatures club. My Camaro carries a remarkable amount of cargo, but the available space was virtually filling as I drove! Just a bit more ‘spirited shopping’ by that member, and I could be trying to tow a U-haul trailer back to San Antone!

The “cargo space factor” began to fade quickly from my mind as I visited with Carroll & Gary and gazed at what was on display scant feet away from me; an “Oak Shadows” room box, built for Carroll by The Guys From Texas and furnished with beautiful Mission Style furnishings, a NAME House Party souvenir chair and other delights. It continued to sing its seductive song to me until I could stand it no longer – *phoned home* and received permission to use the household checking account. (Yes, I have been married for over 40 years and yes, I have full access to the checkbook, but this was NOT a small amount I was proposing to spend!)

I drove home with a snugly packed load; the trunk, deck, passenger seat and passenger-side floor area were packed tightly with several emptied, towel-swaddled room boxes and many shoe boxes of their carefully wrapped contents, plus a transformer & lead-in wire tucked behind the driver’s seat. (Remember that – there will be a test later!) Triumphant and exhausted, I pulled into our driveway at 7:30PM, with just enough energy left to over-see the temporary placement of the Conservatory and Oak Shadows (right in the middle of the dining room table! Good night, all!!

58/365 Good news eye exam

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

Spent the AM attempting to do catch-up reading of my various on-line miniaturist’s interest groups. Took myself off to the optometrist’s for my 2 PM appointment, to see what had changed since my last (2005!) exam. Answer: very little, which is Good News! It seems that my oddball “deep astigmatism” is still being counterbalanced by the normal ageing process;)

57/365 Mini Mode

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

I am definitely back in mini-mode: SAM’s BD in Tomball this past weekend, more work accomplished on that project this morning, a road-trip to Dickinson, Texas scheduled for Thursday (more about that later) and a 1.5 day workshop with the “TGFTGP” (The Guys From Texas Guinea Pigs) in their New Braunfels workshop this coming weekend! Sort of wears me out thinking about it, but I shall muddle through and enjoy!

56/365 "Your Insurance Saved You . . . ."

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Yesterday’s work on ‘Tis The Season (the SAM’s ’08 BD project) brought me to a point where I could ascertain what paint colors I needed. Of course, Murphy’s Law prevailed – none of them are colors I have in my huge stash! (DH’s comment was, “I thought you already had one of every color!”) Well. . . . . . .theses are tans & neutrals and. . . .no, I don’t have them. Fortunately, Hobby Lobby still has their .77 & .99 cent sale in progress today, so I added a couple of the usually-expensive metallics to my basket.

My second errand was the pharmacy, to pick up the next month’s supply of Humira. I usually do not read the receipt carefully, but this time I found myself undoing the *privacy fold* and received a reality check! “Your Insurance Saved You $3415.29.” Saved is definitely the key word! It certainly made me realize I am blessed to be covered by medical insurance! (The normal dosage of twice a month costs half that – still unavailable to I-wonder-how-many-who-need-it!)

DD & GD were visiting today; GD is practicing standing up and balancing. She can “dance to the music” without knocking herself over!

54/365 Half & Half

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

The 6:30 AM wake-up call from the motel switchboard was not a welcome sound, but I figured I’d function a great deal better after a cup of coffee. Hmm, what’s going on here? I plugged the coffee pot in. I turned the switch to “on” . . . .well, there weren’t actually any labels visible, but I turned the switch in the direction opposite to where I found it. I watched . . .I waited. . . I think I actually vocalized a plea or four – but no luck, No Coffee!

New Goal: Get washed, get dressed, get packed and get to the “complimentary breakfast” FAST! Since I start off rather stiff and slow in the morning, *fast* was a challenge; I think I may have set a *personal best* record in this morning’s quest for caffeine ;-) After joining around 35 fellow miniaturists in the motel’s ‘cozy’ breakfast area (at least 15 more than the area was designed to welcome in one sitting) and gulping down some steaming hot motivation, it was time to storm the fortress. Huh? Oh, right – we are ladies and gentlemen all. . . .it was time to drive to the site of the 2008 SAM’s (Society of American Miniaturists) Birthday Party!

Finding working space for 110-120 people & good lighting on a small budget is always a major challenge for the host club – this year’s committee met the challenge admirably. A little bit of quick-stepping to a certain table directly under a bank of bright lights made the set-up even better! After nibbling on fresh fruit (and securing more coffee, of course), it was time to get down to some serious work on this year’s project; a half-inch scale Christmas living-room with a fireplace, corner bookcase, holiday table, table-top tree, armchair and large mullioned window. (” ‘Tis The Season” is the theme.)

I didn’t finish my room box completely in the 8 AM-4 PM workshop, but I spent some time visiting with buddies I seldom see and looking at all the wonderful raffle items on display. There were several boxes I put one or two raffle tickets in, but the was one special item which garnered a fistful of my tickets! It was a beautifully finished half inch scale house with wood flooring and fresh wallpapers. Because I wanted very much to win it, I was resigned to the fact that it would go to someone who placed one ticket in its box. That’s Murphy’s Law, isn’t it?

By 3 PM, I was half-finished with the project (well, sort of; I used the floor piece as my back wall! Will have to redo that at home.), running on only half my cylinders, and relaxing while applauding the raffle winners as they were announced. As one of the truly special raffle items which were donated, the half-inch scale doll house was one of the last items to be raffled off. Our chairwoman announced, “The winner of the doll house is. . . .”, and I uttered a quiet “Any one but me” which was only heard by those sitting nearest to me. When she announced “Christy Blackburn”, my shocked & delighted scream was heard throughout the room!!

My driver was ready to leave early, too, so we bid goodbye to as many of the group as we could get to and took to the road. Traffic was light (and our route was a great deal better!) – I was back at Casa Blackburn by 7:30 PM to show off my “half & half” to DH & DD. I even got some hugs & snuggles with “The Pixy” (aka my grand-daughter.)
